Made In-House

Haggis, Made the Proper Way in Ontario

Rich, savoury, peppery and warming — our haggis is made in-house in the Crawford’s tradition, in the formats Scotland actually uses. Two done correctly: the haggis slice for breakfasts, and the large haggis ball for Burns Night and dinners.

If you grew up with haggis, you already know the smell of it warming in the pan on a cold morning — deeply savoury, generously peppered, comforting in a way few foods manage. If you didn’t, here is the short version: haggis is a traditional Scottish dish of oatmeal, warming spices and finely minced meats, cooked until rich and crumbly. It tastes far friendlier than its reputation suggests: think of a well-seasoned, peppery meat-and-oat mixture, hearty and moreish, at home on a breakfast plate or as the centre of a proper dinner.

At British Pride Bakery we make our haggis in-house, carrying on the much-loved Crawford’s legacy that Ontario families have trusted for years. It is not a novelty and it is not a gimmick — it is a serious, traditional product, made in the two formats that matter, for the kitchen table and for the trade.

“A haggis ball is not a party bite. It is the round you carry to the table, slice generously, and remember.”

Haggis Slice

Scotland’s finest, sliced and ready for the pan.

Scotland’s national dish in a form made for the pan: a savoury blend of meat, oatmeal and warming spice, sliced ready to fry until crisp at the edges. It slots straight into a cooked breakfast, sits proudly on a Burns Night plate, or fills a roll with a peppery, comforting richness. Deeply traditional and full of flavour.

What it is: Haggis is a traditional Scottish savoury dish of minced meat, oatmeal and spices; the slice form is cut for frying like a breakfast patty.

Haggis Balls

A whole round haggis, cooked and carved to serve.

A large, round whole haggis, commonly around a kilo, in a vegetable-style casing and made to be cooked whole then sliced at the table. All the peppery, oaty richness of Scotland’s national dish in a generous, serious format built for Burns Night, a proper dinner or a full event. Steam or bake it through, slice into rounds and serve with neeps and tatties the way it was always meant to be.

What Haggis Actually Is

Haggis is one of Scotland’s great comfort foods. At its heart it is a mixture of oatmeal, meats and a distinctive blend of warming spices — plenty of black pepper, a savoury depth, a little heat. Cooked properly it turns soft and crumbly, holding its shape when sliced and falling apart beautifully under a fork.

For Canadians meeting it for the first time, the easiest comparison is a rich, peppery meat-and-oat stuffing — but that undersells how good it is. It is the sort of food that belongs to memory: Sunday breakfasts, cold-weather suppers, and the one night a year when it takes centre stage entirely.

02

Made In-House, Carrying On the Crawford’s Legacy

Our haggis is made in-house to a recipe generations of Ontario customers already know and love — the Crawford’s tradition, kept alive and made fresh. That means real seasoning, a proper texture and the balance of oats and meat that separates a good haggis from a forgettable one.

Making it ourselves means we control the format, the size and the quality from start to finish. It also means we can supply it the way both home cooks and professional kitchens actually want it — which brings us to the two formats, done correctly.

03

The Haggis Slice — For Breakfasts and Plated Service

The haggis slice is the everyday format: haggis in a sliced form, ready to fry, grill or bake. It is what you want on a full breakfast alongside eggs, bacon, sausage and a good tattie scone — and it is exactly what busy kitchens reach for when they need to plate haggis quickly and consistently.

For cafés, hotels and caterers running breakfast and brunch service, the slice is the workhorse: even portions, quick to cook, and instantly familiar to anyone who has had a proper Scottish breakfast.

  • A sliced format built for breakfasts and plated service
  • Fries, grills or bakes in minutes
  • Perfect on a full breakfast, or as a plated starter
  • Consistent portions for cafés, hotels and caterers

The Haggis Ball — The Proper Centrepiece

This is haggis done the traditional way for the table. A haggis ball is a large, round haggis — commonly around 1kg — made in a vegetable-style casing, cooked whole by steaming or baking, then brought out and sliced to serve. It is generous, it is serious, and it is the format Scotland reaches for when haggis is the star of the meal.

To be clear, because it is often misunderstood: a haggis ball is not a bite-sized snack, a canapé or a bar nibble. It is a full centrepiece — the round of haggis you carry to the table on Burns Night, address with a few words if you’re feeling ceremonial, and slice generously for everyone gathered round. Served the classic way with neeps and tatties (that’s mashed swede and potato), it turns a dinner into an occasion.

Burns Night — 25 January

Every 25 January, Scots and friends of Scotland mark Burns Night in honour of the poet Robert Burns — and haggis is the guest of honour. It is the one evening built entirely around this dish: the haggis carried in, sliced and shared, served with neeps and tatties and, if tradition holds, a wee dram.

Demand climbs sharply in the weeks before, both from families planning a supper at home and from venues hosting suppers of their own. Our haggis balls are made exactly for that moment. If you are planning a Burns Night, order early — it is our busiest haggis season by far, and the round centrepiece is what you want on the table.
