Kingston is a city that keeps its history close — limestone streets, a working harbour, and a downtown built by people who expected things to last. It suits us. British Pride Bakery is an Ontario family business more than sixteen years in the making, grown from a single bakery begun in Cambridge in 2010 into nine shops across the province, and our Kingston shop brings the full experience to eastern Ontario: a proper British bakery, a traditional butchery counter, and aisle after aisle of imported groceries from home.

Come for the pies and you’ll stay for everything else. Our bakers turn out golden steak pies, pasties and sausage rolls with pastry that flakes the way it should, alongside scones, Victoria sponge and the sort of cakes that make a Sunday feel like an occasion. At the butchery counter you’ll find bangers, back bacon, black pudding and haggis made with real craft — the Crawford’s butchery legacy our family proudly carries on from Niagara. And on the grocery shelves sit the teas, sauces, crisps, chocolate and sweets that taste of childhood, whether yours was spent in Manchester, Glasgow or Cardiff.

For plenty of people across eastern Ontario, a visit here is a small pilgrimage — a chance to fill the boot, catch up over the counter and leave with supper sorted. With more than a thousand five-star reviews and a shelf of awards behind the family name, we like to think the trip earns its miles. Come once and you’ll see why our regulars treat it less like errands and more like going home.

Find us on Dalton Avenue in Kingston’s east end, an easy stop just off the main routes with parking at the door. It’s a straightforward drive whether you’re coming from around the city or up from the 401, which makes it a natural pick-up point for shoppers across Eastern Ontario.

Worth the drive

Worth the drive from across eastern Ontario

The closer you live, the more excuses you’ll find. Neighbours from Amherstview slip in for sausage rolls still warm from the oven, families in Bath fold a visit into a drive along the lakeshore, and more than a few from Sydenham have learned to time their errands in town around a box of scones and a steak pie for supper. A British shop like this becomes part of the weekly rhythm quickly — first it’s a treat, then it’s tradition.

Others make a proper day of it. From Napanee and Belleville, the run along the 401 ends with a full trolley: haggis and black pudding from the butchery counter, the imported teas and biscuits that never taste quite right in substitute, and enough pies for the freezer to see the household through until next time. From Gananoque and the Thousand Islands side, the trip west pairs nicely with a wander through Kingston’s old downtown — though we’d argue the pasties alone justify the petrol.

What to come in for

01

A proper meat pie

Hand-made British pies with the fillings people actually miss — steak and gravy, steak and ale, chicken and leek, a breakfast pie for a slow morning. Warm one for tonight and tuck a few in the freezer for the week.

02

Pasties worth the drive

A pasty is a hand-held pastry parcel, crimped along the edge and packed with a proper filling — the Cornish with beef and veg, or cheese and onion, corned beef, chicken curry. The original British fast food, and still one of the best reasons to stop in.

03

The cake and sweets counter

Victoria sponge, empire biscuits, custard horns, eccles cakes and little strawberry tarts, all set out the way a bakery counter should be. Grab one for the tin, or a whole cake for the occasion.

04

The British grocery aisle

The taste-of-home shelves — biscuits, crisps, tea, chocolate, tinned favourites and the sauces that finish a fry-up. For a lot of Kingston shoppers this is the whole reason to make the trip east.

Kingston — your questions

Right here — British Pride Bakery Kingston is a family-owned British bakery, butchery and imported grocer serving the Limestone City and the wider region. We bake pies, pasties, sausage rolls, scones and cakes by hand, and we’ve been perfecting our craft in Ontario for more than sixteen years.

Yes. Our butchery counter carries traditional haggis and black pudding alongside proper bangers and back bacon, made in the Crawford’s butchery tradition our family carries on from Niagara. If you’re planning a full English or a Burns supper, this is where eastern Ontario comes to stock up.

They are — handmade by our own bakers using recipes the family has refined over sixteen-plus years and nine Ontario shops. Expect proper pastry, generous fillings and nothing that tastes like it came off a production line, because it didn’t.

Our grocery aisles are stacked with imported British sweets, chocolate, crisps, biscuits, teas and sauces — the brands expats miss and locals get happily hooked on. It’s the closest thing to a corner shop from home you’ll find in eastern Ontario.

We do welcome wholesale enquiries. If you run a café, pub, restaurant or shop in the Kingston area and would like proper British baking or butchery products on your menu or shelves, speak with our team and we’ll be glad to talk through what we can supply.

Absolutely — the calendar matters in a British shop. Look for haggis around Burns Night, hot cross buns and Easter chocolate in spring, and mince pies, Christmas cakes and festive favourites as the holidays approach. Seasonal stock is popular, so it’s worth coming early.

Current opening hours are shown on this page and on the store’s Google listing, which we keep up to date — it’s the best place to check before making the trip, especially around holidays.
