The Savouries Counter

Pastry, gravy and the taste of home

The hand-raised pies, folded pastries and golden rolls that made teatime feel like teatime — baked fresh across our nine Ontario stores.

There is a particular kind of hunger that only a proper savoury can settle. Not a snack, not quite a meal — a pastry warm from the oven, a crust that shatters just so, a filling seasoned the way you remember it. For anyone who grew up with a bakery on the high street, this is the counter you came looking for.

We bake our savouries the traditional way, in small batches, because shortcuts show. Some of these names will be old friends. Others might be new to you — and if so, all the better, because there is a whole world of British baking waiting behind that pastry, and we are glad to introduce you.

On the counter

The savoury counter

Scotch pies, bridies, pasties, scotch eggs, faggot balls and the sausage rolls people queue for.

Savoury

Scotch Pie

The Saturday-at-the-football pie, done properly.

A double-crust Scottish classic: seasoned minced beef, peppered and spiced, packed into a firm hot-water pastry case built to hold its shape. The dished top is made to be filled, whether that’s a spoon of beans, a splash of gravy or a scoop of mash. Handheld, satisfying and endlessly versatile.

What it is: A Scotch pie is a small, round Scottish pie in a sturdy pastry shell filled with spiced minced beef, with a dipped top made for adding beans, gravy or mash.

Beef Sausage Roll

Flaky puff pastry, savoury beef, gone in three bites.

Seasoned minced beef rolled in golden, buttery puff pastry and baked until the layers shatter and the filling stays juicy. A proper British bakery staple, warm from the oven or packed cold for later. The kind of thing that never lasts long on the counter.

Pork Sausage Roll

The original sausage roll, flaky and warm.

Seasoned minced pork wrapped in light, golden puff pastry and baked until crisp and flaky. The traditional British sausage roll, with a savoury, well-seasoned filling that stays moist inside crackling layers. Best eaten warm, though few ever wait that long.

Savoury

Chicken Curry Pasty

A proper vindaloo kick in flaky pastry.

Diced chicken in a hot vindaloo-style curry with diced vegetables, folded into golden puff pastry and baked crisp. A warming, spiced handheld with real heat for those who want it. The pasty tradition given a fragrant, fiery twist.

Savoury

Cornish Pasty

The original portable lunch, crimped by hand.

Seasoned minced beef with peas and carrots sealed inside a hand-crimped pastry case and baked golden. The classic crimped edge was made to be a handle, the whole thing built to travel and eat on the move. Hearty, honest and a proper meal in one hand.

Savoury

Scotch Egg

Egg, sausagemeat, crisp crumb, cut and marvel.

A whole hard-boiled egg wrapped in seasoned minced pork, rolled in breadcrumbs and fried until deep golden and crisp. Cut it in half for the classic reveal of firm egg at the centre. A picnic and pub-plate legend, just as good cold as it is warm.

What it is: A Scotch egg is a whole hard-boiled egg encased in seasoned sausagemeat, coated in breadcrumbs and fried, eaten hot or cold.

Bridie

A Forfar favourite: seasoned minced beef and chunks of onion folded into puff pastry and baked into a plump, savoury half-moon. No potato, just meat, onion and pepper in a crisp golden case. Hearty, handheld and unmistakably Scottish.

What it is: A bridie is a traditional Scottish pastry, like a pasty but filled only with seasoned minced beef and onion, no potato.

Corned Beef Pasty

Rich, salty corned beef with chunks of onion and seasoning, folded into golden puff pastry and baked until crisp. A nostalgic favourite that leans on the deep, savoury flavour of proper corned beef. Filling, familiar and made to be eaten in the hand.

Cheese & Onion Pasty

A creamy blend of cheese, onion and potato folded into golden puff pastry and baked until crisp and molten inside. A proper vegetarian option that never feels like an afterthought, with the comforting savoury pull of melted cheese. Warm, filling and hard to put down.

Best for a meat-free hot lunchView

Traditional Pasty

The full-size traditional pasty: seasoned minced beef with turnip, potato and onion in a hand-crimped case, baked until deep golden. Bigger and heartier than the Cornish, with the classic root-vegetable filling that makes it a meal in itself. Proper Sunday-sized comfort in pastry.

Best for a substantial sit-down lunchView

Beef Faggot Balls

A proper old-school butcher’s dish: rich meatballs of beef, liver and kidney, seasoned and simmered in a deep beef and onion gravy. Full-flavoured and unashamedly traditional, the sort of savoury classic that’s getting harder to find. Serve with mash and peas for a plate straight out of a British kitchen.

What it is: Faggots are traditional British meatballs made from minced meat and offal such as liver and kidney, seasoned and served in a rich onion gravy.

Best for cold-weather dinners with mash and peasView

Cheesy Beaners

Comfort food in a Scottish pie shell: Heinz Beanz layered with creamy mash and cheese, baked until the top turns golden and bubbling. Familiar, hearty and just a bit indulgent, it takes the flavours of a favourite tea and packs them into handheld pastry. The kind of thing kids and grown-ups fight over.

What it is: Cheesy beaners are a Scottish pie shell filled with baked beans, mashed potato and cheese, baked until the cheese is golden.

01

The Scotch Pie

A Scotch pie is a small, round, double-crust pie with straight sides and a dip in the lid — traditionally filled with well-seasoned minced meat. The pastry is sturdy enough to hold in the hand, which is exactly how it was meant to be eaten: at the football, on a cold morning, straight from the paper.

Ours are hot-water-crust and properly peppered, the filling savoury and generous. Fill the little well on top with gravy, beans or mash if you like — that dip in the lid was made for it.

02

Bridies & Pasties

A bridie is a Scottish savoury — a folded, half-moon pastry filled with seasoned minced beef and onion, its edges crimped shut so nothing escapes. Think of it as the handheld comfort of a warm kitchen, wrapped in flaky pastry.

The pasty is its Cornish cousin: a fuller parcel of beef and vegetables, sealed along one crimped edge, built for a working lunch and just as good on the sofa. Both travel well, reheat beautifully, and taste of somewhere you may not have been in a while.

  • Bridie — folded Scottish pastry, minced beef and onion
  • Pasty — hearty beef and veg, the classic crimped parcel
  • Both hold their own hot or cold, at home or on the go
03

Sausage Rolls & Scotch Eggs

A good sausage roll is a simple thing done properly: seasoned sausage meat wrapped in puff pastry and baked until the top is deep golden and the layers flake apart. Ours are made to that standard, no compromises in the seasoning.

And the scotch egg — a whole egg wrapped in sausage meat, coated and cooked until crisp — is picnic royalty. Cut one in half and you will remember exactly why it earned its place on every proper spread.

04

Faggot Balls & Cheesy Beaners

Faggot balls are a traditional British savoury meatball, made from richly seasoned minced pork and baked in a deep, glossy onion gravy. Old-fashioned in the best sense — hearty, warming, and the sort of thing that went straight onto the plate with mash and peas on a weeknight.

The cheesy beaner is our own bit of comfort: molten cheese wrapped in pastry and baked until oozing and golden. Unfussy, indulgent and gone far too quickly — you have been warned.

Baked Fresh, Close to Home

Every savoury on this page is made and baked for our counters across Ontario, so what you carry home tastes of the morning it was made — not a warehouse and a long lorry.

Pop into any of our nine stores to see the day’s selection. Some savouries sell out, some come warm from the oven mid-morning, and the best way to find your favourite is simply to come and ask.
