From the butchery

The banger you grew up on

Classic British pork sausages, seasoned and filled the traditional way, for bangers and mash, weekend fry-ups and proper pub plates.

A banger is the British name for a pork sausage, and no other word quite captures it. Meatier and more savoury than a breakfast link, a proper banger is coarser in texture, gently seasoned rather than sweet, and made to hold its own under a blanket of onion gravy. Ours are filled at the butchery counter and taste the way you remember: the centrepiece of Sunday tea, the smell that filled the kitchen on a cold morning.

For anyone who hasn’t grown up with them, think of the banger as the sausage a British cook reaches for first. It is the one in bangers and mash, the one that anchors a full breakfast alongside bacon and beans, and the one every good pub keeps on the menu. Made properly, it needs nothing more than a hot pan and a little patience.

“A hot pan, a little patience, and a proper banger. Some things don’t need improving.”

Pork Bangers

The sausage a proper British breakfast is built on.

Plump, properly seasoned pork sausages with the coarse texture and gentle pepper of a real British banger. They colour up beautifully in the pan and belong at the heart of a fry-up, on a bed of mash, or split into a buttered roll. This is the taste people mean when they say a sausage should taste like something.

What it is: Bangers are traditional British pork sausages, coarser and more savoury than a North American breakfast link, named for the way they used to sizzle and snap in the pan.

Why they’re called bangers

The name is a bit of British kitchen history. Older sausages, packed with more water, would spit and pop under the heat of the pan, and the sound gave them their nickname. The banger stuck, and so did the affection for it.

Ours carry the tradition without the trouble: a firm, satisfying sausage that browns evenly and stays juicy right through. Cook them low and slow and you get that deep, caramelised skin that makes the whole plate.

02

Bangers and mash, done right

This is the dish bangers were born for. A mound of buttery mashed potato, sausages browned all over, and a river of onion gravy poured across the top. Simple, generous, and hard to beat on a dark evening.

They are just as at home in a full English or full Scottish breakfast, sizzled beside bacon, eggs and beans, or coiled on a bun for a bonfire-night hot dog. However you serve them, they are the taste of home on a plate.

Made the way it should be

We make our pork bangers the traditional British way, seasoned to a proper savoury balance rather than the sweeter profile of a North American breakfast link. The result is a sausage with real character, coarse in the bite and honest in flavour.

You’ll find them at the butchery counter in every British Pride Bakery store, filled in-house and sold fresh by the pack, the way a good butcher always has.
